A paper-mache piñata is one of the easiest Halloween party decorations for kids to assemble, even without adult supervision. The hands-on activity only needs a few craft supplies and a little imagination to create a traditional Mexican party decoration.
Pumpkin Piñata Materials:
- one large party balloon
- torn strips of newspaper
- one bottle of white craft glue
- orange paint and green paint
- black magic marker or
- black or metallic gold craft paper
- plastic wall hook
- one bottle green paint
- green pipe cleaner (optional)
- green construction paper
- hard candy and party favors
Basic Design
Inflate a large round party balloon and tie a knot. Layer with white craft glue and torn strips of newspaper several layers thick over its surface, then let dry overnight. Glue is easier to use than the traditional flour and water paste employed in paper-mache art, although some kids may prefer the messy, old-fashioned way of making a pinata. Stress the importance of using four or more layers of newspaper, in order to make the pinata strong enough to support the candy's weight.
Painting Your Piñata
Once the pumpkin is dry, release the air from the balloon and paint the paper-mache surface with bright orange paint; use pieces of black construction paper or a black magic marker to color his facial features. To create a “lit” lantern effect, use metallic gold paper or foil instead of black construction paper. Highlight the features with gold or clear glitter for an additional glow.
Fill It Up
Fill the ñwith hard candy and miniature Halloween party favors that are lightweight. Plastic figures, miniature cars or decks of cards, whistles, hair clips, and other small items are perfect for tucking inside, along with individually-wrapped candies.
Miniature candy bars should only be added if the piñata is stored in a cool place until the party, since melted chocolate could damage the pinata and its contents. Make sure not to overfill the piñata – test its weight as the candy is added gradually, to make sure the paper shell isn't breaking apart.
Seal the Pinata
Use extra paper and glue to seal the top with several layers of paper-mache, sealing inside the base of a plastic hook, leaving the hook outside as a means of hanging the piñata. Paint the top orange and the hook green, then add a few green construction paper leaves. Wind a green pipe cleaner into a spiral and wrap around the hook just above the leaves to accent the stem.
Hang the pinata from a string, tree branch, or sturdy ceiling hook for an indoor party and let young guests enjoy the challenge of breaking it open to collect the prizes inside. Use a sturdy cord or heavy fishing line to best support the piñata.
