Decorating for Christmas doesn't have to be expensive. When it comes to holiday centerpieces all you need is a little imagination.

When decorating for the holidays one of the most popular items to add is a festive centerpiece. They look great on dining tables, coffee tables, mantels, and just about any other empty surface. Here are some ideas for creating fun and festive holiday centerpieces.

Centerpieces Using Fruits and Flowers

  • Put a bouquet of flowers and fruit in a wine or champagne bucket. Place floral foam inside and then create the bouquet. Wooden skewers can be used to hold the fruit in place. Apples, pears, and pomegranates look great in holiday displays.
  • Glue red and white candy canes all the way around a square or rectangular vase. If desired tie a red or white ribbon around it for a sophisticated touch. Fill the vase with red or white flowers. Carnations look great in this vase, but if you want to dress it up even more try roses.
  • Fill a glass vase about one third of the way with tiny pinecones and then add a simple flower, such as a lily, on top. Leave enough of a stem so that it looks like the flower is growing out of the pinecones. Simple yet beautiful.
  • Create a cranberry tree by hot-gluing cranberries to a Styrofoam cone. If space permits a collection of three in varying sizes looks impressive.
  • A bowl full of fruit and seasonal foliage is a simple, inexpensive, and lovely display. Use apples and pomegranates, or oranges and pinecones, or any other fruits and natural items to create a festive fruit bowl. Add pieces of evergreen for seasonal flair. If using oranges, try pushing some full cloves into them to add a spicy holiday fragrance.

Holiday Centerpieces Using Ornaments

  • A long rectangular plate looks festive and elegant when filled with Christmas ornaments (all one color looks best) atop magnolia leaves or evergreen and berries.
  • For a twist on traditional candle displays, place ornaments or decorative cranberry balls on candlesticks and group them in the center of a table.
  • Sometimes the simplest displays are the most effective. Fill a large glass vase (or a collection of three if space permits) with pretty ornaments or pinecones. It's simple and not fussy.

Other Holiday Centerpiece Ideas

  • Use a glass cloche over a very simple display to create an elegant centerpiece. An ornament or large pinecone with some evergreen, or a few flower blossoms on a bed of cedar looks sophisticated and stylish.
  • Gift-wrapped boxes with pretty ribbons look lovely as table centerpieces. Try a stack of three in coordinated gift-wrap. Be sure to add pretty ribbons in complimentary colors.
  • Fill a vase with water about half way up. Throw in some cranberries (which should float) and a floating votive candle.
  • Pick up some cardboard trees (or other seasonally shaped item) and let the kids decorate them any way they want and use them at the kids' table.
  • For a dining table centerpiece, pick up a small fake tree at a craft store (the kind with branches), spray paint it to match the holiday décor, and then hang little tags on it that have the menu written on them. It's super cute and will give guests an idea of what delicious delights are to come.
  • A three-tiered cake stand filled with pinecones is simple yet festive. Feel free to add little bits of greenery and berries.

When it comes to holiday centerpieces there are literally thousands of things you can do. The key is to use a little imagination and remember that you don't have to spend a lot of money. Keep it simple, festive, and fabulous!
