Looking for an easy way to add a little sparkle to your Christmas decor? This simple project yields amazing results.

Christmas is the perfect time of year to tackle some fun craft projects and literally all of these materials, including the pine cones, can be found at your local craft store. Use these pine cones around your own home or give them as gifts. Attached to a wreath, dangled from your Christmas tree or nestled in a clear glass jar, these glittery gems will add a touch of whimsy to your home this holiday season.

Materials

  • Spray adhesive
  • Glitter in various colors. Silver, gold and pastels are very pretty.
  • Ribbon (optional)
  • Small hanging screw (a screw that has a loop or hook at one end)
  • Pine cones in various sizes
  • Spoon
  • Container or bag to catch the glitter

Directions

  1. If you are going to be hanging your pine cones, insert the hanging screw prior to using the spray adhesive. This will give you something to hold on to and will also help you avoid removing any of the glitter before the glue dries. Grasp the pine cone carefully and slowly turn the screw into the end of the pine cone that would have been attached to the tree.
  2. Grasp the pine cone by the screw and spray with the adhesive, covering as much of the surface as you'd like. Sometimes, leaving the inner nooks and crannies bare gives a snow covered effect once the glitter is sprinkled on top. If you aren't using a hanging screw, simply set the pine cone on it's end and press your finger on the top end to hold in place and spray with the adhesive.
  3. Scoop out a little bit of glitter with your spoon and liberally sprinkle the pine cone until you reach the desired effect. Shake as much of the excess glitter off as possible to avoid leaving glitter all over your home.
  4. Set aside to dry according to the spray adhesive directions. If using ribbon, attach it to the hanging hook once the glue has completely dried.

If you plan on using pine cones from your own yard or perhaps the local park, be sure to shake out any bugs and make certain that the pine cones are completely dry before you begin this project.

Feel free to get creative with this idea. Experiment with the glitter. Coat some pine cones with a thick layer and others with a thin layer of glitter. Create pine cones with the same color, or use a couple different colors of glitter on one pine cone. The oversized pine cones look great in place of or even paired with a wreath on the front door, placed on a fireplace mantle with some candles, or in a decorative bowl on your dinner table. Smaller pine cones make perfect Christmas tree ornaments. For an unexpected surprise, work a fine piece of string or yarn into the thick end of a small pine cone and attach it to a wrapped present or gift bag and add some ribbon in a complimentary color.

Christmas decorations don't have to consist of the same old song and dance. Take this project and run with it. Not only will you love the look, but you just might see these glittery pine cones popping up in the homes of your friends and family as well.
