Cheap Ways to Decorate Your House for Spring

Apr 14, 2009 Carly Duff

During this hard economic time, some people might be finding that decorating their house for Spring is too expensive. Being crafty will make this cheap and fun.

Spring is here and you are probably ready to brighten up your home. Money is tight these days so not everybody can go to their local home design store to get everything they need for spring and summer. With some easy tips, you will be able to decorate your home by recycling used products and bringing in nature.

The Broken Mirror

Many people have heard of the myth that if you break a mirror you will get seven years of bad luck. Unfortunately, people will always break a mirror or two in their lifetime. Instead of picking up the broken pieces and putting them in the garbage, save the pieces and make a one of a kind design for your home. No need to stress about the 'bad luck.' Keep the broken pieces right where they are.

Have some wood laying around? Find a flat piece of plywood and take it over to your shattered pieces of mirror. Get some super glue and the paint color of your choice. Green and yellow paint will bring all the warm feelings of spring. Bring some of your gardening gloves incase the pieces of the mirror are sharp and now you are ready to make a masterpiece.

  1. Paint the piece of wood the spring color of your choice; green, yellow, purple, white or even black for an all year-round color.
  2. Pick out the shattered pieces of mirror that go nicely together while waiting on the paint to dry.
  3. When the paint is completely dry, super glue the back of your selected pieces of mirror and add them to the beautifully painted piece of wood.
  4. Finally, once you are done designing your "Broken Mirror", add a hook to the back of the wood and find a place to hang it in your home.

Nature Jars

Many of people's favorite food comes in glass jars such as pickles, jelly or jam. Instead of throwing these jars away or sending them to your local recycling company when you are through, save them. An incredible design can come from these jars.

If you are having trouble finding a way to bring nature into your home this spring, take your emptied glass jars and go outside.

  1. Pick up an armful of sticks and take them to a comfortable working place where your glass jars are waiting.
  2. Get a bucket and find little rocks. Fill the bucket about half way. Fill the rest of the bucket up with green grass.
  3. Take yourself and your bucket to your working place.
  4. Break up all the sticks into half an inch to an inch long pieces and fill one of your jars up with the broken sticks.
  5. Fill your other jar halfway with the little pebbles. Then add the grass.

Take your new "Nature Jars" inside and display them. The "Nature Jars" go nicely on a window ledge or coffee table.

Just by using your crafty side, you can cheaply get your home ready for Spring.

I wish I would have read this BEFORE I threw away my broken mirror! Now I will have 7 years of bad luck AND nothing hip for my wall.

I purchased a mirror at the thrift store with a crack in it, brought it home and finished it off! I loved the idea so much that the seven years bad luck was worth it, plus it already had a crack in it so I figure I'll only have three and half years bad luck!
