It's only once a year, so take the time to make an individual gift for that special person.

The idea of giving money or a bank cheque as a gift can be pretty boring. The idea of taking the time and trouble to find that perfect gift can not only mean a lot to the person receiving the gift, but to the giver, too.

So consider other options to battling through the Christmas shoppers and tramping around the stores and malls with arms straining.

Hand Made Gifts Can Be Special

It isn’t necessary to be artistic or nimble fingered to come up with some really special gifts. Firstly, think about the person the gift is intended for. Do they have a favourite pet? Take a photograph and scan it into the computer. Crop the picture to, say, the head, and then enlarge. Print out on photographic paper and then buy a simple wooden frame. A simple gift, well thought out, and personal for the recipient. As an extra special addition, paint paw prints on the wooden frame.

For those who might be a little more artistic, print the picture out on ordinary paper in black and white or grey scale mode. Then trace the picture onto proper drawing paper such as watercolour paper, and either leave as a pencil drawing, go over in black ink and leave as a pen and ink drawing, or paint in with a simple watercolour or acrylic paint.

Gifts Children Can Make

Grandparents love to receive hand made gifts from their grandchildren. Consider what the grandparents like, perhaps flowers or birds or butterflies. Search on the internet for, say, butterfly pictures to colour. Make sure the images are free and there is no copyright infringement. This will bring up free online pictures that can be printed out and then coloured in by children. Cut out the picture when completed, and tape it to a straw. The straw can be stuck into a flower pot and enjoyed by delighted relatives.

Pots of hyacinth bulbs are popular at Christmas and smell wonderful. They usually come in brown plastic pots. Why not buy some plain brown ceramic pots and then paint them? Just paint different colours or for the adventurous paint flowers or butterflies. To give a more seasonal feel decorate with plastic berries and glitter. The possibilities are endless. Then transfer the hyacinths and there is a great personal gift.

For relatives who live far away and have to have gifts mailed to them, consider buying seed packets. When it is cold and wet or snowy outside, there is nothing nicer than receiving a packet of spring flower seeds as a reminder that better weather and favourite flowers are not far away.
