It is usually a real challenge to come up with a Christmas gift to make for a man that he will really enjoy.

Editor's Choice

In this project we are making a gift that he will not only love, he will use all year long. Many men have the problem of keeping their tools organized. They know they have a Phillips head screwdriver, but can never find it when they need it. The same with wrenches, pliers, and any other tool they use frequently.

We are going to make an organizer that they can keep in the house or truck. It is easy to take on the go and won't take up a lot of room. The best part is it is almost impossible to use the tools and not put them away when you are done.

Materials Needed:

  • One half yard of canvas fabric
  • Four yards of seam binding
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Tools
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

Preparation

You will need to measure the tools you are making the organizer for. Measurements will be different for screwdrivers than for wrenches. Our directions will be for a set of screwdrivers but the measurements can be altered for any other tools.

Our tallest screwdriver is twelve inches. The tallest item will determine the length of the fabric. Double the measurement of the longest item and add three inches. For our screwdrivers that will be 12+12+3=27. Our fabric was purchased 18" x 45" so we need to cut the length to 27".

Cut three pieces of seam binding 18" each and two pieces 27" each. The remaining piece is 36".

Sewing

  1. Sew one 18" piece of seam binding to each of the 18" ends of the fabric. Sew the two 27" pieces of seam binding to the 27" sides of the canvas. Fold one 18" side up six inches. This is going to make a pocket. Stitch the sides together. Sew the third 18" piece of seam binding along the new bottom you have just created.
  2. Find the centermost point of your pocket and sew a line from top to bottom. Measure the area on each side of the center seam and divide by three. Use that measurement to mark the area into thirds on each side of the center seam. Sew a line on the pocket from top to bottom at each mark. You should now have six pockets.
  3. Find the center of the remaining yard of seam binding and sew the center to the side of the canvas in the center. Make sure it is sewn well.
  4. Put a screwdriver into each pocket handle end first. Flap the excess fabric over the screwdrivers to cover the top and hold them in place. Roll up the organizer from the side that does not have the ties. When it is all rolled up, wrap the ties around each side and tie in a bow.
  5. If you are making an organizer for an item with a large head, like a wrench, allow for the head width in your measurement and add additional seams in between items so the wrenches don't slide around.

You can also make an organizer for every member of your family by making one for barbeque tools, kitchen tools, chopsticks, makeup brushes, kids watercolor paint set or paint brushes
