This Halloween turn your little superhero into a superhero. Your child will want to wear this all year long.
To make a cape and belt
Materials Needed:
3/4 of a yard of 45" black felt
One piece of black foam sheet 11" x 17"
Two sheets of yellow foam 11" x 17"
Scissors
Computer and printer
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Chalk
Saucer or bowl
1" piece of velcro
Cape
Open the black felt so that it is a 27" x 45" rectangle. The longer sides are the top and bottom the two shorter sides are on the left and right. Place the bowl half onto the center top in an upside side position. Chalk around bowl. This is the neck of the cape. Cut out area along chalk line.
Using your chalk, draw a line from the right edge of the neck to the right bottom corner. Repeat on the left side. Cut along your chalk lines. On the bottom edge of the cape mark with chalk 12" from the outer edge on both sides. On the sides measure about eight inches from the bottom and mark with chalk. On each side you will have two marks. Connect the two marks in an arch to curve the outer edges upward. Cut away fabric at chalk marks.
Take your bowl and lay it half on the bottom edge at the farthest right position. Mark with chalk around bowl. Move the bowl over beginning at where your chalk mark ended and lay it half on the fabric. Mark with chalk. Repeat moving the bowl all the way across the bottom of the fabric to scallop the cape.
From the scraps of black felt, cut a 16" x 3" rectangle. This is for the neck. Find the center of the top of the cape and the center of the strip. The 16" piece will be folded in half over the neck extending beyond the cape. Hot glue one side at a time working from the center out toward one edge and then the other. When one side is glued down you can glue the remaining side of the neck down over the cape neckline.
Hot glue one piece of the velcro on the neck extension. Measure for the second piece by having the costume wearer try it on. You want the neck to be loose. Overlap the neck pieces to see where the second velcro should fall and hot glue. Do not make tie strings. Velcro is safer. If they were to get caught up on anything the velcro would give way rather than have the child choked.
Using your computer print off the bat symbol in a landscape position measuring ten inches across. Use this for a pattern to cut the bat symbol from the yellow foam sheet. Hot glue the bat to the back of the cape. (See picture 1)
Belt
Cut two 2 1/2" strips the length of the yellow foam sheet. Cut one oval measuring 8" x 4" from each of the yellow and black foam sheets. Lay the oval flat. You need to meet the two ends of the yellow strips in the center of the oval. This is the wrong side of the center front of the belt. Hot glue the strips into place. Cut the center out of the black oval leaving only a black border about 1/2"-1/4" thick all the way around. Glue into place. Print off the bat symbol from your computer so that it measures about five inches. Use this for a pattern to cut a bat out of the black foam scraps. Glue to the center front of the belt oval. (See picture 2)
Measure the ends of the belt by placing it on the child and overlapping it about four inches. On one end cut a mushroom shaped tab.(See picture 3) On the other end cut one inch slits. To put the belt on, fold the sides of the mushroom into the center and insert it through the slit. Open the mushroom on the other side of the slit.
