It's that time of year that we are all getting tired of the winter and anticipating the first blooms of spring.
Making a garden wind chime can help bring the spirit of spring a little bit sooner.
Materials Needed:
Hand drill with a very fine bit 1/16" or smaller
Handsaw
Fishing line
One 3/4-1" thick Bamboo rod four feet in length
Optional-Large asian style coin
Preparation
Using your saw, cut the bamboo into one 10" piece, two 8" pieces and two 11" pieces.
On your 10" piece drill a hole about 1/2" from the end that goes all the way through the rod.
Repeat on the opposite end.
Drill a hole at the centermost point between the two holes drilled.
Drill two more holes across the 10" rod. Measure in approximately 3" in from each end and drill. Make sure all of the drilled holes are at the same angle.
Drill a hole about 1/2" from the end on each of your 8" pieces. Drill only one end of these bamboo pieces.
Repeat step five with your 11" pieces.
Cut five lengths of fish line about 12" long each and set them aside.
Assembly
Take one piece of fishing line and thread it through one of the end holes of your 10" piece of bamboo. Knot one end of the fishing line repeatedly until it is secure enough that it will not be able to slide back through the hole.
On the other end of the fishing line thread the line through the drill hole you made in one of the 11" pieces.
Repeat steps one and two on the other end of the 10" piece.
Thread another piece of fishing line through the next hole in on the 10" piece and knot it the same as you did for the other pieces so that it stays secure.
Thread the other end through one of the 8" pieces and secure it.
Do the same thing on the opposite hole with the remaining 8" piece of bamboo. This should leave you with one piece of fishing line and the center hole unused.
If you have a large asian coin as listed in the optional materials needed, secure one end of the fishing line to the coin and attach the other to the center of the rod. This also means cutting one additional piece of line to use as a hanger. If you have nothing to hang in the center, it is alright to leave it blank.
Use the last piece of fishing line through the center hole through the top and secure on the underside.
Now all that is left is to choose the best place in your yard to enjoy your creation.
