This is a very fun gift to give. It is a very large four-layered cake of diapers. Not for eating, this is the gift that keeps on giving.

Including diaper sizes that will last over a period of time also will help the mom for some time to come. It doesn't hurt that it makes an impressive presentation and a very memorable moment for all.

Materials Needed:

  • 2 yards of fabric-baby flannel works great
  • 4-6 packages of size 4 diapers
  • 3-5 packages of size 3 diapers
  • 2-4 packages of size 2 diapers
  • 2-3 packages of size one diapers
  • Cardboard- approx. 24” x 24”
  • Cardboard- approx. 18” x18”
  • Foam core board 24” x 36”
  • Curling ribbon approx. 20 yards
  • 2-3” ribbon- 10 yards
  • Optional-rattles, pacifiers, diaper pins, etc.

Prep:

Cut the foam board to 24” x 24”. This is your base.

Cut out of the fabric the following pieces:

  • 1-24” square
  • 1-18” square
  • 1-12” square
  • 1-6” square
  • 4- 24” x 6” pieces
  • 4- 18” x 6” pieces
  • 4- 12” x 5” pieces
  • 4- 6” x 5” pieces

You are going to end up with 4 pieces, one 24”, one 18”, one 12” and one 6”.

Take the 24” pieces. You will have one square and four rectangles. Sew the four rectangles into a long strip. Starting at a corner, sew the long strip to the edge of the square working your way around the square. Sew the beginning and end of the long strip together. This should end up a five sided box shaped.

Do the same for the 18” pieces.

Repeat for the 12” and 6“ pieces.

Take a diaper and roll it up. Tie it off with the curling ribbon. Continue with all of the diapers making sure to separate the sizes.

Lay the fabric box with the square down and the sides up on the cardboard. Using the size 4 diapers, stuff the box by standing the diapers up side by side. You will want to make then snug. When this is done, lay the foam core board on top. Holding the foam core board on top and the cardboard underneath, flip the whole so the foam core board will be the base. It helps to use two people to do this. Remove the cardboard.

Now lay the 18” fabric box square side down in the same manner on the 24” cardboard. Tie up the size 3 diapers and stuff this section.

Before moving this section, go back to the 24” piece and slide 2 pieces of the wide ribbon cut 9’ long in an “X” under the base. You will pull these up later to tie the whole off.

Taking the 18” cardboard, lay this on top of the 18” fabric box and flip onto the 24” layer of our baby cake. Make sure to center.

Repeat the process with the 12” fabric box and the size 2 diapers. Once stuffed, flip onto the 18” layer.

The same process applies to the 6” layer and the size one diapers.

Once all of the layers are in place, bring up the ribbons and tie leaving streamers to drape across the layers. These can be hot glued onto the fabric it you want them secure. Add a bow to the top.

Optional-You can decorate the cake with baby paraphernalia if you choose. You can pin or hot glue pacifiers and bottles, rattles, booties and even little miniature babies crawling along the layers.

You can also add layers including newborn and size 5 diapers. You can make it with larger or smaller layers, satin instead or flannel, or just use pink or blue. It is up to you. Just make sure you enjoy the process. Any new mom would appreciate the diapers and the effort you put into making it special.
