Natural Christmas ornaments made from applesauce and cinnamon belong in everybody's cache of country Christmas ideas.

This easy-to-do project makes a wonderful kid's Christmas craft. There is no cooking or baking required. Making Christmas decorations for the home is a family tradition to be cherished.

There are variations on this traditional dough recipe to make Christmas decorations that scent the home and look lovely on the Christmas tree. Please note that none of the recipes are edible; they are to be enjoyed for their visual beauty and aroma only.

Recipes for Apple Cinnamon Dough

The most basic recipe calls for equal portions of two ingredients:

  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 cup cinnamon

Other recipes call for additional ingredients. The addition of glue hardens the consistency of the dough and makes it easier to work with.

  • 1 cup cinnamon
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 Tablespoon of white glue, such as Elmer's

The addition of more Christmas spices makes for pleasant variations.

  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 cup cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves,

or

  • 1 cup cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup applesauce
  • 1 Tablespoon nutmeg
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cloves
  • 2 Tablespoons white glue.

Method for Making Apple Cinnamon Dough Ornaments

  1. Mix dry ingredients together.
  2. Gradually mix in wet ingredients.
  3. Kneed and mix well. If too wet, add a little extra cinnamon. If too dry, add a little extra applesauce, or even a few drops of water.
  4. Roll out dough on wax paper, or work surface sprinkled with extra cinnamon. Place a piece of wax paper on top of the dough to prevent sticking to the rolling pin.
  5. Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Use a drinking glass or cookie cutters to cut out shapes. A drinking glass makes nice, round Christmas tree ornaments.
  7. Take a drinking straw, and poke a hole near the top of each shape.
  8. Arrange ornaments on cookie cooling tray.
  9. They must dry for up to four days. Turn them over once a day to aid the drying process.

Decorating Handmade Christmas Ornaments

When the ornaments are dry it is time for more creativity. Fabric paint puffs up just like icing on cookies and adds a nice touch to apple cinnamon ornaments. Paint them according to their shapes.

  • Paint features on a gingerbread man.
  • Paint ornament dots on a Christmas tree.
  • Paint horizontal designs, such as lines and dots, on round ornaments.
  • Paint bowed vertical lines on a round ornament.
  • Outline some of the shapes with fabric paint.

When paint is dry, thread a ribbon through the hole made with a straw. Tie with a nice bow. Attach an ornament hook to the ribbon, and hang apple cinnamon dough ornaments on the Christmas tree. Enjoy the natural cinnamon scent in the home.
