A Valentine for the kids to make

Making a vase with tissue paper

Jan 29, 2007 Mary Welling-Bonney

This project is not just for Valentine's day. It is a great project kids can do when they are stuck in the house or need a gift for a grown up in their life.

Materials needed:

  • ugly bud vase (You know the ones you have under the sink or in the pantry that you never use.)
  • glue
  • scraps of tissue paper
  • paint brush
  • newspaper or plastic table cloth to protect the work surface

Lay out the table protection first. This will make a mess but it is washable.

Have the kids tear the tissue paper into pieces about 2-3 inches.

I like to pour the glue into a container. Preferably a disposable carton left over from fast food. It is not necessary but it does make it easier.

Take a piece of tissue paper and paint one side of it with the glue. Lay it across the vase. Continue laying the glued tissue to cover the entire vase overlapping pieces.

It is a good project for showing the kids about color. When you overlay tissue paper, you create new colors.

When the whole vase is covered, have the kids paint the entire outside surface in glue. Allow to dry. I would use two coats just to be sure.

That's it. You have recycled that ugly old vase and allowed the kids to create something to be proud of.

Most of all, just let them have fun.
